Teen Summer Volunteering Projects  -  July 1 - August 31, 2022 - (Grades 6-12)

How It Works
Summer Volunteering offers quick opportunities for those who are unable to participate in our school year structured program.   Various projects and activities arise for chances to earn volunteer hours.  Any volunteer hours accrued will not carry over into the Fall Junior Library Council program.  Students will receive a certificate with the amount of completed hours.    You must be a Westwood or Washington Township resident.  Currently some projects are:

Book Sale Monitor:  Volunteer  to help with the set up, breakdown of tables, chairs, book displays and sale of used books in the library’s parking lot.  This opportunity is depends on how often the Friends of the Library will offer a book sale to the public over the summer.

Book Buddies:  Help early readers practice their reading skills by reading to you for 15 minutes.  You will be trained in selecting appropriate books for students virtually by using e-book format and in person.

Citizen Science:  This offers you the best option if you will be away at camp, on vacation or working because it allows you to complete a project at a time convenient to you from wherever you are.   How it works: Download the free app onto your smart phone and create an account.  Next, input your  zip code and the site will harvest all scientific activities in the area.  You must follow all of the instructions to complete your chosen activity and then send us proof of completion which may be a site generated email, certificate or other notification.  Complete as many projects as you like.

Host a Children’s program:  Got talent!  Gaming, chess, coding, nail art, STEM, magic tricks, cheer routines, card games, crafting, acting, writing, sketching etc. You can use your special talent or hobby to teach children in either Grades K-2 or Grades 3-5.  We will review the format of the program together and other details.  Choose a one-time program workshop or a weekly series.

Math Tutor:   Are you great with numbers? Help children in Grades 2-5 with elementary level math skills for a one on one, 30 minute session.  We will review the format and activity materials.

Program Prepper:  Help the Youth Services Librarian prepare for different programs by cutting, sorting, collating and organizing various materials for distribution to program attendees.

If you are interested in any of the above-mentioned volunteer opportunities, or have an idea for another activity, please contact Denise Lester, Youth Services Librarian at denise.lester@westwood.bccls.org with:
