Notary Services
How to Get Notarized:
What we cannot do:
- Appointments are recommended by calling 201-664-0583. Walk-in service may be available , but is not guaranteed.
- Westwood patrons must provide a current, government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.). The Notary will keep a record of patrons, including contact information.
- Documents must be signed in the presence of the Notary.
- If necessary, the patron must provide their own witnesses, who must also provide photo ID. Library staff and other patrons are not available to witness.
- We ask that people have a library card.
What we cannot do:
- We cannot notarize: I-9 forms, wills, trusts or related estate documents, deeds of property, real estate, lease or mortgage documents, birth certificates, death certificates, marriages certificates, etc.
- We cannot make certified (true) copies of documents, such as birth certificates or passports. Instead, the patron may write, sign & swear to a written declaration stating, “I declare this is a true, exact, and unaltered photocopy of _____”, which the Notary may then notarize.
- The patron must be able to speak the same language as the Notary, as well as have their document written in a language the Notary can understand, or else the notarization cannot take place.
- The Notary Public cannot give legal advice or provide legal references, including determining the type of notarization to perform (acknowledgement, jurat, etc.). The document should include notarial wording, or you should check with the document’s issuing or receiving agency for instructions.
- The Notary has the final say in whether to notarize a document or not, and may decline if the customer, document, or circumstance of the request raises any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt, or uncertainty.
- Westwood Library's Notary Public is not an attorney licensed to practice law and may not give legal advice about immigration or any other legal matter or accept fees for legal advice.
