In 2022, a statue of Lorraine Hansberry was revealed in Times Square on June 9 and then began a tour of the country on its way to its permanent home in Chicago, Hansberry’s birthplace. Hansberry was the first African American woman to have a play performed on Broadway. Her play, A Raisin in the Sun, became an instant hit and is considered to be one of the greatest American plays of all time.
In this month of February, let's commit to learning more about Hansberry and by reading and discussing this play. Copies will be available at the front desk starting February 1st. We'll discuss this play, and Hansberry, on Monday, March 13 at 7pm (in person only), register at the link above.
Everyone who participates in our focus on Lorraine Hansberry who would like a chance for the play tickets should register by emailing [email protected] as instructed above. Whether you participate in the discussion or just read the play on your own, watch one of the videos or read one of the recommendations below, you can register for a chance to win two free tickets to the Hansberry play currently on at BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music). The tickets are for the final performance on Friday, March 24th.
