Welcome to Westwood Library's 2022 Summer Reading Program
Friday, June 24-Friday, August 12
​For kids entering PreK-5th Grade

(Summer Reading for Teens and Adults Click HERE)
Step One--Register for the grade appropriate summer reading program below.   Parents please register each child based on the grade they will enter in September.  If you need a library card--email library@westwood.bccls.org

Step Two--After registering, keep logging your books online, attending virtual or in-person programs or completing "On Your Own Time" activities.  Each week we will track your program participation, completed activities and books read. Make sure to submit your completed activities and logging of books by Friday at 6:00 pm and you'll be notified if you qualify for a prize!

Let's read and discuss this year's One Book Westwood, "Down, Down, Down: A Journey to the Bottom of the Sea" by Steve Jenkins with an oceanographer and then make a paper collage similar to the book. (45 mins.)


Bio Blitz: Build A Bug (prek-K)

For Bio Blitz week, let's learn about some interesting bugs, then create paper bugs from different pre-cut shapes.  Supplies provided. ​

You'll have fun looking for paper bugs in the library.   Find them all to find a small prize.

Let's listen to a story about a shark and learn some interesting facts about this famous ocean creature and make a take home craft. (45 mins)

Bio Blitz: Bug Slime (Grades 3-5)

Who doesn't love slime?  But how about insect slime?  We will make clear slime that mimics snail/slug slime and learn about insects that produce this interesting property. Limited supplies. (45 mins)​

Safari Adventure  Puppet/Magic Show

Go on a “Safari Adventure” with Jenny the Giraffe! Children will be amazed by the beautiful puppet “Jenny” the Giraffe! Kids will search for all the Safari animals and they will also become the animals in a charade game! Music and Magic that amazes, Safari Style of course! (45 mins)

Sand Art Boards ~ Sea Life (Grades K-5)

Pre designed boards with sea creatures can be filled with colored sand to create ocean themed art.  Limited supplies. (45 mins)

We will review some attributes of the ocean and recreate our own take home ocean in a (plastic) bottle.  (45 mins)

Have fun in this 4 week program where you will build confidence, critical thinking, research, organization skills, improve oral and written skill and make friends.  Taught by an experienced, award-winning high school honor student. (1 hr)

Intro to Filmmaking (Gr 5-9)

Do you love movies and want to learn how they are constructed? This 4-week program taught by an award winning NJ high school student, will guide you through the steps on "How to Make a Hollywood Quality Movie".  Class meets once per week.  Must bring your own device (smart phone, laptop or DSLR camera). 1 hr.​

You'll love this popular book series as we read and then compare the facts about which ocean creatures would win if they fought each other.  Book Club meets weekly for 4 weeks.  Books will be available at the Circulation Desk as a bundle and will be read in this order:  7/7 "Who Would Win? Lobster vs Crabs"; 7/14 "Who Would Win? Hammerhead vs. Bull Shark"; 7/21 "Who Would Win? Whale vs Giant Squid" and 7/28 "Who Would Win? Killer Whale vs Great White Shark".  Each discussion will be followed by a craft.  (45 mins)
